I went to cupboard where the cookies are kept
I knew what was waiting for me there
As my fingers closed on the cookie
I felt the sensation of
The flour, sugar, chocolate and butter
Touching my skin
I sat in my chair
I closed my eyes
I let my hand drift first to my nose
I breathed in the smell of this confection
I tasted it first by its scent
let that come into my brain
And heighten my anticipation
Only then did I put the cookie to my lips
I nibbled with eyes closed
Letting the taste fill my mouth and my soul
Bite by small bite I tried
To let this cookie be the only thing
In my life that mattered
I pushed away intruding thoughts
Always coming back
To this gift of indulgent sweetness
Clasped between my fingers
Slowly the cookie grew smaller
And entered my being
Becoming a part of me
No longer just a cookie
But a pathway to something else
A state of being that celebrated
This moment
Unlike any other moment
When the cookie was gone
Its sweet gift lingered in my mouth
My hand was empty
But my soul was full.
